Giving
The King County Employee Giving Program is an avenue for King County employees to plan their charitable giving. Similar to planning for your retirement, the EGP allows you to determine the amount and frequency of your annual charitable donations. You decide what amount fits within your family’s budget and which participating nonprofit organizations reflect your values.
Thousands of ways to make a difference. Hundreds of nonprofit organizations. One Program.
Benefits of donating through the Employee Giving Program
Convenient - You can plan your giving for the year and then not worry about it until the next year! All you have to do is fill out the pledge form, the rest is taken care of by us.
Control - You control the amount, frequency and destination of your charitable donations.
Documentation - By donating through the Employee Giving Program annual charitable campaign, you will receive documentation of your gift in the following ways:
- Copy of your pledge form. New tax laws require that employees retain a copy of their pledge forms for tax purposes.
- Pay stub. For employees using payroll deduction and/or time donation, the last pay stub of the year lists the total amount of charitable deductions taken over the course of the calendar year. This number reflects the total amount of charitable deductions taken from your check including all organizations to which you donate. It is not broken down by nonprofit organization.
- Acknowledgement from the nonprofit organization(s). If you choose to be acknowledged, you will receive documentation from the nonprofit organizations.
Employees who chose to donate anonymously to participating nonprofit organizations will not receive confirmation of donations from the participating nonprofit organizations.
If you would like acknowledgement from the EGP it is available upon request from the EGP Administrator.
Tax deductible donations - Save your receipt; your donation is tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law.
Giving time -King County is the only public sector workplace giving program that allows employees to donate eligible vacation or compensatory time. King County Finance and Business Operations will calculate the net cash value of time donations. You will receive a receipt after the net cash value of your donation has been sent to your designated nonprofit organization.
Anonymity - If you would like to donate to a nonprofit organization, but would not like your name released to the participating organization, you can choose not to release your name. Simply note your preference in section 3 of the donation form.
Pre-screened organizations - The Employee Giving Program committee screens all participating organizations to ensure that they meet our criteria.
Flexibility - King County employees can choose to donate to up to as many participating nonprofits as they like, including up to 20 participating nonprofit organizations by payroll deduction. Whether you choose to give via payroll deduction, vacation or comp time donation, a one time gift, or a combination of the three, employees enjoy flexibility in charitable giving.
Internal administration - The King County Employee Giving Program is run by King County Employees for King County Employees. A full time administrator, 15 member employee committee, loaned campaign executives and over 200 volunteers make this program happen. An administrative fee is charged to employee charitable donations to pay for the program. Traditionally, it has been 8-12% but fluctuates from year to year. It is for actual costs of the program. Workplace giving is one of the most cost-effective ways for nonprofit organizations to raise money. This is the entire budget for the following year’s program. If there is any money left at the end of the year it goes back to the nonprofit organizations. If you have questions about the costs of the program, please contact the Employee Giving Program Administrator at employeegiving@kingcounty.gov.
