Federal Leave Administration Laws

The following links and documents have been created to help explain the various laws available to King County employees.

Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA)

The Family and Medical Leave Act provides eligible employees with job and medical benefit protected leave for up to 12 weeks in each rolling 12 month period.

National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA)

The National Defense Authorization Act amends the FMLA law by providing a total entitlement of up 26 weeks to care for the injury or illness of an injured family member that was hurt in the line of active military duty.

This Act also amends FMLA by allowing use of FMLA for any “qualifying exigency” leave associated with the pending active duty military leave of their spouse, son, daughter or parent of the employee.

Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act of 1994 (USERRA)

USERRA provides eligible employees with job protection and other rights while serving in the armed services for training or active duty deployments.

Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)

The ADA prohibits employers from discriminating against qualified individuals with disabilities.

Washington State Family Care Act (WFCA)

The Washington Family Care Act provides eligible employees with job and medical benefit protected leave during use of their paid accruals.

Washington Family Leave Act (WFLA)

The Washington Family Leave Act provides eligible employees with job and medical benefits protected leave for up to 12 weeks in each rolling 12 month period.  This law was most recently revised under Substitute Senate Bill 6185 to mirror the entitlements of the federal Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA).

Military Family Leave Act (MFLA)

The Washington State Military Family Leave Act provides eligible employees with job and medical benefits protected leave for up to 15 days once an eligible family member has been notified of an active deployment.  This law also extends the current 15 day military training period to a new annual total of 21 days in length.

Domestic Violence/Victims Employment Leave

The Domestic Violence/Victims Employment Leave provides eligible employees with reasonable leave from work for circumstances resulting from domestic violence, stalking, or sexual assault.

Sex Discrimination – Pregnancy, Childbirth and Pregnancy Related Conditions

The Sex Discrimination laws related to pregnancy or childbirth related conditions provide job protected leave for the period of the temporary disability.
