Citizen mediation program

The InterLocal Conflict Resolution Group, sponsored by King County and the King County Labor Council, offers mediation to citizens who have been referred by King County departments. The service is a fast, free and effective way to resolve issues that effect your neighborhood, your living situation or your business. If you find yourself frustrated by a repeated annoyance, mediation may help you to find a lasting solution.

Mediation is an informal and private way for people to work through disagreements. An impartial third party assists people in a candid exploration of the issues and options, and allows the people involved in the problem a way to find solutions that work for everyone.

Contact the mediation program to learn more about how to schedule a mediation session: (206) 296-8740 or Citizen.DR@metrokc.gov.

Why is mediation offered?
Complaints received by King County Enforcement agencies are not always covered by codes or laws, and yet they create friction among citizens. The InterLocal Conflict Resolution Group offers citizens another method for resolving these concerns.

What types of cases can be resolved through mediation?

Virtually any conflict can be resolved through mediation if everyone involved agrees to participate. The InterLocal Conflict Resolution Group accepts cases referred from other King County Departments:

  • Noise
  • Barking Dogs (and other animal annoyances)
  • Nuisance
  • Boundary Disputes and Fences
  • Tree issues
  • Water and drainage issues
  • And more…

What happens if I don't want to mediate?

The mediation process is entirely voluntary. There are no penalties for deciding not to mediate.

Mediation is confidential. No contact will be initiated with the other person without your permission.

If you are unable to find a solution, you can always return to your enforcement agency. You lose none of your rights.

Why choose mediation?
  • Most people who decide to mediate find solutions.
  • The people involved in the problem maintain control over the outcome.
  • Mediation opens the door for improved relationships.
  • The service provided by the InterLocal Conflict Resolution Group is FAST, FREE AND EFFECTIVE.
