Employee preparedness for flooding in the Green River valley

There is a higher risk of flooding in parts of Auburn, Kent, Renton, South Seattle and Tukwila and many homes and businesses that have not typically seen flood water in the past could be flooded. The flood risk is higher If heavy or prolonged rain occurs this flood season (roughly October through March), because an earthen bank next to the Howard Hanson dam was damaged after record high water last winter. Until the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers can make repairs, it must limit the amount of flood water it stores behind the dam.

King County employees may be affected in many ways. Work sites in the Green River valley may be impacted, King County employees who live in the valley may be affected, and employees who commute through the valley may need to find alternate routes.

Please take a moment to get informed, and make a plan. By taking the time to prepare now, you will know how to respond if a flood event occurs this flood season.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much warning will we have in advance of a flood incident, and how long will it take the water to reach worksites after water is released from the dam?
There are a number of variables that affect advance warning times, which are dependent upon where the water flows, how fast, and whether the entire levee system holds. That is why preplanning is critical. Flood season in the Pacific Northwest is typically late October through early March.
