Eat Smart: Report Card — Saturated fat consumption

Eating too much saturated fat, the type of fat that is solid at room temperature, may increase risk of heart disease. Similarly, eating too much trans fat, which is made when liquid vegetable oil is processed to become solid, also may increase risk of heart disease. And, eating too much cholesterol, a fatty substance found only in animal-based products, may clog arteries.

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend consuming less than 10% of your daily calories from saturated fat.

Most of the fat in your diet should come from food sources of polyunsaturated and monounstatured fats such as those found in fish, nuts, and vegetable oils most often.

In 2008 more than three-quarters (75%) of Wellness Assessment respondents reported that on a typical day they eat less than 2 servings of high fat foods such as:

        • High-fat desserts, e.g. pies, pasties, rich cakes, chocolates, cookies
        • Whole milk, cheeses and ice cream
        • Fatty meats, e.g. sausage, lunch meats, bacon, heavily marbled steaks and roasts
        • Breads or snacks with lots of fats, e.g. croissants, rich muffins, chips.

This is an increase of almost 12% since 2006 indicating that overall, the King County employees and their spouses/domestic partners are consuming less saturated fat.

Healthy People 2010 specifies the health objectives for the nation. The Healthy People 2010 goal for saturated fat consumption is:

  • Objective 19-8: Increase the proportion of persons aged 2 years and older to consume less than 10% of calories from saturated fat to 75% or more.

King County currently does meet the Healthy People 2010 goal for daily consumption of saturated fat.
