Choose Well biometric screening events

There is widespread agreement that patients who are informed, active participants in their own health care have better outcomes, and their health care is apt to cost less. As part of our continuing effort to give employees the tools they need to be active participants in their own health care, the Health Matters team is proud to sponsor a series of events to help you:

  1. Know your numbers
  2. Choose quality, affordable health care

At these events you will be able to get a biometric screening of your cholesterol, blood pressure and blood glucose levels. You will also be able to meet representatives from our health care plans who can tell you more about how they can help you find quality, affordable health care in the region.

Know your numbers -- get a biometric screening

Healthy numbers mean a healthy body. If you follow a healthy lifestyle – eat smart, move more, and avoid smoking – you can even turn bad numbers around.  Small changes can make a big difference. For example, every point you raise your HDL ('good' cholesterol) you reduce your risk of coronary disease by 2%. So just raising HDL by five points cuts your heart disease risk by 10%.

Thanks to these biometric screenings funded through a grant by Aetna, you can check your numbers and act accordingly. Check the schedule below and register:

Choose quality, affordable health care -- meet representatives from Aetna and Group Health

Across America, there are serious gaps between the health care that people should receive and the care that they actually receive. Here in the Puget Sound Region, a 2004 RAND study estimated people get the right care only 59 percent of the time. The choices you makes about where and when you get health care can affect your pocket book and your health.

Thinking of switching to Group Health?
Out-of-pocket expenses for KingCareSM are going up in 2010, but expenses in the Group Health plan will remain the same. Come learn why a leading consumer magazine named Group Health the number one managed care organization in the U.S. and why Group Health clinics some of the region’s highest quality ratings in the Puget Sound Health Alliance Community CheckUp Report

What is a biometric screening?

A biometric screening provides a detailed assessment of a person’s basic health indicators, including:

  • Blood pressure
  • Cholesterol (HDL and LDL)
  • Blood glucose

The biometric screening includes an explanation of results, as well as goal-setting tips and ideas. This gives members an awareness of potential health conditions, sending them down the right path to healthier habits.

Onsite health screening key for Health Hero Lynn Anders

Last year the Senior Deputy Ombudsman took part in a health screening offered to county employees. She was surprised by the results — her cholesterol was high and her blood glucose was in the pre-diabetic range. Read her story.
