"Buddy-up" for successHaving an exercise partner can be a great way to start or stick to an exercise program, or kick your current program into high gear. Working out with others provides support and accountability, and can build self-esteem. One reason teaming up with an exercise buddy works is that we see someone similar to ourselves performing a physical activity and it strengthens our belief that we can do the same thing. The more self-confident we feel performing an activity or keeping up in a class, the more motivated we become. People who exercise with a friend are more successful at exercising consistently. With an exercise buddy you can: - motivate each other.
- keep each other accountable.
- encourage each other to start a new activity or class.
- distract each other from the discomfort you might be experiencing.
- try some healthy competition and challenge each other to push beyond your limits.
- keep each other safe, especially with outdoor activities.
When looking for an exercise buddy, look to family, friends, neighbors or co-workers first. Maybe your buddy is the person you see regularly in a class, on the machine next to you, in the Activity Center or at the gym at the same time as you. You can also find buddies by: - attending the Gym Discount Program Open House on February 1, 2012 and take advantage of the enrollment discounts available to King County employees.
- signing up for an activity or event at your local community center or running store.
- searching for activity groups in your neighborhood Journal or on meetup.com.
Whomever you team up with, make sure that you and your buddy trust and positively support each other. Sharing common fitness goals and working with your buddy to meet these ensures that you will see the results you desire and get in better shape.
