Around the County 2011

Prosecuting Attorney's Office

Staff from the PAO teamed up to walk on April 7th.  Some staff walked with the Prosecuting Attorney leaving from the Chinook building at noon.  Others walked near the Regional Justice Center, meeting in front of the RJC at the 4th Avenue entrance at noon.Employees from King County's Archives group walk in the rain on April 7th  From the RJC staff:   WE DID IT!  We dodged a few raindrops, but then sun made a nice showing and we walked two miles. Thanks to everybody who participated and also a big thank you to Kim Padrow for organizing the MRJC PAO walk for King County Walks Week.

King County Archives

Six of the seven King County Archives staff members registered to participate in King County Walks Week. We split up for two trips to make sure the Archives facility was adequately staffed during our walks. Part of our team donned hooded jackets and grabbed an umbrella for a rainy Thursday afternoon stroll around the Archives neighborhood, stopping to admire the local community garden. On Friday, the sun came out for our second walk, a loop that took us southeast of the Archives, past the grounds and statuary of the Buddhist park on S. Main Street. Although she didn’t register, our seventh staff member ended up walking to the International District during her lunch hour, so the Archives celebrated 100% participation in King County Walks Week.

DAJD - Correctional Facility 3rd Shift
Submitted via Wendy Warren

My 3rd Shift Team grew from 4 persons to 6 before our week was up and we're still walking for our health. We walk a fast pace for 8x down and back, over the KCCF Jail sky bridge. This = 2miles when we're done walking in 30 minutes. What is so neat about our team is that our Captain, Michelle Fields, walks with us. Her pace is a little slower, but, I have assured her that give it a few times and she'll be walking right up with the rest of us, if not, ahead of us.

The most recent thing to happen, was, on this past Monday night, we all agreed to meet at 0300 to walk our two miles. Everything that could happen went wrong but our Captain went on ahead and began her walk. When we all caught up to her, she said " I knew if I didn't come up here and start my walk, I wouldn't do it. I need to do this for me". She completed one mile in about 13 minutes. Now she is telling us how good she feels afterwards, and you will see her doing stretches when she is finished and when she returns home. I think that is fantastic!

DNRP Environmental LabEmployees from the King County Environmental Lab during King County Walks Week

We have a lofty goal. We're attempting to summit Mount Rainier this summer! Ben Budka, Ray Spindle and Susannah Rowles, who all work at the King County Environmental lab, are participating in the American Lung Association's Climb for Clean Air on The Mountain. We all train individually throughout the week, often walking the stairs around Queen Anne or at Golden Gardens. But training on level ground is important too! So we walk the Burke-Gilman trail from the lab to the Fremont Bridge and back during our afternoon break - a 15 minute mile is a quick pace and a great way to avoid the post-lunch drowsiness! You can follow our training progress on our blog, www.theglacialexpress.com

DNRP Water Land and Resource Division

Our Noxious Weed Program took a 20 minute brisk walk after our staff meeting on April 4, 2011. We bolted out of the King Street Center and headed for the waterfront, we walked and talked along the waterfront then looped back to our building. It was a great way to get the blood flowing after sitting in a staff meeting! The few coworkers who could not attend the staff meeting that day reported walking during lunch during the week (approximately 4 hours walked by 15 people). We appreciate the emergency supplies (flashlight/whistle).
