How are other workgroups celebrating King County Walks Week?

King County Roads

The King County Roads Maintenance Environmental Unit walked at least once each day during Walk Week at the Greenwood Memorial Park in Renton, as it's across the street from the Roads Maintenance facilities in Renton, and is very calm and quiet, and there's no vehicular traffic to contend with.......we appropriately named our team the Walking Dead. Because there are 15 of us, we broke into groups and staggered our start and end times so that our office had the appropriate coverage.  We submitted a photo of one of our groups at the Jimi Hendrix memorial.

A good time was had by all, and by the way, we're continuing our walks!

Assessments

Thanks for organizing the walks, it spills over and we continue doing them a few times a week throughout the summer as a result. I also wanted to tell you about a walk we did many times last summer and ended up doing yesterday. I call it “Carol’s Death March” named after Carol Venetiou a senior appraiser in our office. (Both she and Becky Blackstock are more than 10 years older than I am and either one of them could kick my butt in a walk-a-thon, which encourages and inspires me to get and stay healthy). At any rate, what we did last summer and somewhat yesterday was walk up Cherry Street (it’s more quiet so we can visit) and on Ninth we head north (that’s how the hike got it’s name). From Ninth we walked up to Freeway Park and came out between 6th and 7th on Seneca then we turn left on 6th. We followed 6th back to Cherry where we turn right. We walked down to 5th and end up where we started. We did this walk in 45 minutes and the people who followed us thought the walk was invigorating and beautiful with all the flowers blooming. I didn’t know if you were interested in adding any walks, but it’s a suggestion. Again thanks for organizing this and have a great day!

Brightwater Treatment Plant

On April 8th, ten to fifteen walkers will join Maintenance Supervisor Rob LaRock on a job site walk.  They'll cover between 1 and 1.5 miles.

King County Elections (Renton)

Megan Coppersmith will lead over 20 employees on a walk Wednesday April 8th.  They'll start at their office and head to a local trail close by.  Employee are also discussing holding a Healthy Potluck during the week.

Renton Public Health Center and Dental Clinic

About 30 employees have signed up to walk on April 8th, assuming there’s no snow that day. They’ll do a 15-20 minute walk around the area – it’s a walk they’re familiar with since several employees do that walk regularly.

King County Jail

We, (4) of us, will walk on 3rd shift at the King County Jail for 30 minutes per day across the 8th floor bridge. It's been said that if you walk it back and forth for (8) times, you've walked (1) mile. We will walk Monday April 06, thru Wednesday April 08.

White Center Public Health Center

Public Health Week is shaping up to be awesome here at White Center Public Health. We've got games, food, stress relief, massages and best of all we'll share motivation and fun that will last the rest of the year.

Many of us plan on walking throughout the week and we'll also all get healthy snacks. We'll be learning more about going green and participating in a trivia game. We'll also get massages and go bowling together!! Of course, we'll have one of our legendary potlucks and share healthy recipes. Check out this week’s activities calendar.

After a handful of meetings and a lot of dedication, the planning team (Kal Ambrose, Yen Baynes, Suzanne Gray, Deborah Schuknecht, Deborah Stanley and Dawnette Yust) has come up with a week to remember.

How is your workgroup celebrating King County Walks Week? Send us your stories and we'll publish them on this web page.
