Healthy Workplace

This county employee is working out at the Chinook Building activity centerThrough numerous programs, King County supports the efforts of employees to maintain or improve their health. Many of these programs are at work and contribute to a workplace that is supportive of employee health.

Activity Centers

In support of employees’ efforts to improve or maintain their health, King County maintains some employee Activity Centers. These centers are modest and are for employees to use on their own time, at their own risk. For more information on locations and equipment go to Activity Centers

Flu Shot Program

The flu is highly contagious and can be deadly. The flu can make healthy individuals seriously ill and threaten the life of those who are weakened by disease or immunosuppressed. Every year the county makes it free and convenient for employees to get flu shots by operating on-site clinics at worksites around the county. For more information go to: Flu Shot Program

Gym Discount Program

The King County Gym Discount Program provides discounted gym memberships for employees, retirees, and dependents to support their efforts to move more every day. Twenty-three fitness organizations now offer employees an average 20 percent discount at 124 locations throughout the Puget Sound region. For more on discounts and locations see Gym Discount Program

Live Well Challenge

During this annual countywide health challenge, close to one thousand employees have fun competing in teams for prizes, earning points for eating smart, moving more, stressing less and quitting tobacco. Live Well Challenge

Onsite Physical Activity Classes

King County has created guidelines for employees who want to participate in physical activity classes at the workplace.  Employees may volunteer to lead classes, or groups of employees may organize to self-pay an instructor to come onsite.  Guidelines are available online or at request by calling 206-263-6085.  All participants must sign a waiver.

Program for Early Parent Support (PEPS)

PEPS brings together parents who face similar challenges, stresses and joys to find support and further education on family health. Parents of children ages newborn – 5 years old meet weekly at county worksites over lunch. For more information see PEPS

Weight Watchers at Work

One of the most effective weight management programs in the country is made convenient for employees by offering one-house weekly meetings at King County worksites. Since the program began in 2006, more than 8,749 pounds have been shed by participants who drop an average of 8 pounds per 13-week session. According to the Partnership for Healthy Weight Management, a weight loss of five to 10 percent can measurably improve health outcomes.
