Story

“I’d like to thank the Metropolitan King County Council for the collaborative and open process that led to final adoption of this budget. We work well together, and that has led to an efficient and effective budget process that benefits the people of King County.

“Some of the items of which I’m most proud include:

  • Investment in tangible steps to prevent and end youth homelessness in King County – quickly connecting them back with family when it is safe and appropriate to do so, or providing connections to safe housing – added by the Council pursuant to the Youth and Young Adult Homelessness Action Plan I introduced.
  • Funding to begin our transformation of community-based prevention efforts into a fully-accountable and integrated system of health and human services.
  • Restoration of water quality monitoring that will better protect Puget Sound and our other waterways, a Council addition made possible by a recent, favorable court ruling;
  • Building our financial reserves, for a future rainy day; and

  • Continued investment in Lean practices, ongoing employee training, and other innovative efforts to improve the daily delivery of public services.

“But adoption of this budget doesn’t mean our work can end. We still face the reality of closing an $18 million dollar shortfall each year for the next two years. If the Legislature fails to act on transportation, we face draconian cuts to bus service.

“I look forward to signing this budget, and to working with the Council and the people of our region toward our shared vision of a diverse and dynamic community with a healthy environment and economy, where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
