Story

Hundreds of couples are expected to line up to apply for marriage licenses at the King County Recorder’s Office on Dec. 6, the first day under state law that licenses can be issued to same-sex couples - and King County will be using social media throughout the first three days of this historic event to keep residents informed and to help gauge demand for licensing services.

Twitter
Follow @kcnews on Twitter, www.twitter.com/kcnews, for helpful tips and information for couples as Dec. 6 approaches. Throughout the day on Dec. 6, get real-time updates as events unfold, check the status of the wait in line, and much more. King County Executive Dow Constantine will also be tweeting at @kcexec, www.twitter.com/kcexec. Follow the hashtag #MEDayWA to join in the conversation.

Facebook
King County has created a Facebook page at www.facebook.com/KingCountyWA. From there, users will be able to access special Facebook “events” on Dec. 6, 7, and 8. Registering for the events on Facebook is encouraged, as it will help the County gauge how many couples are planning to attend each day. Please note that registering for a Facebook event will not guarantee you a spot in line to get a marriage license. People who are in line will also be able to “check in” at the Recorder’s Office via QR codes posted around the King County Administration Building.

Instagram
The marriage equality events will no doubt generate many photogenic moments. King County has set up an Instagram account at www.instagram.com/KingCountyWA, and couples are encouraged to share photos with the community via Instagram hashtags #MEDayWA and #KingCounty.

Web
Everything that couples need to know when they apply for a marriage license is available at www.kingcounty.gov/marriage.  Among other items, a clock counting down the days, hours, minutes, and seconds to 12:01 a.m. on Dec. 6 is posted on the page. An FAQ is also available to help couples and officiants preparing for the “big day.”
