King County Sheriff
John Urquhart

Deputy files lawsuit

Summary

A King County deputy has hired the Connelly Law Firm in Tacoma to sue King County claiming age and gender discrimination. A prior, outside investigation concluded that no discrimination occurred.

Story

In 2015, Sheriff Urquhart directed that an outside attorney specializing in discrimination allegations be retained to investigate claims of discrimination and retaliation by Deputy Mary Syson.  The investigator reported in July, 2015, that “no evidence was uncovered as a result of this investigation to support the allegation [that Syson’s supervisors] discriminated, harassed, or retaliated against Mary Syson based on age or gender.”

In February of 2015, Deputy Syson received a Written Reprimand for a sustained finding of “failure to submit timely reports.” In a letter dated September 28, 2015, Sheriff Urquhart reduced the reprimand to a non-disciplinary Letter of Corrective Counseling.
