Images from King County's robust recreation program of the 1950s and 1960s show aspects of postwar social culture as revealed through its leisure activities. Here, Al Widmar, Seattle Rainiers pitcher, gives tips to West Seattle High School student Dave Olson, at a baseball clinic at White Center Park, 1953.

Of particular note are photographs documenting the department's policy (then somewhat unusual) of allocating equal time for girls' and women's sports, particularly team sports. Women's basketball players go for the ball in this photograph from the early 1950s.

King County also broke new ground in establishing sports and recreation programs for physically and developmentally disabled persons. These checker players are participants in a summer recreation program for disabled youth in the late 1950s.
