Criminal Justice Strategy and Policy
The Criminal Justice Strategy and Policy team provides project management, facilitation and analytical support for King County’s efforts to develop coordinated and effective responses to youth and families in crisis. Our work focuses on:
- Improving the delivery of services provided in our Courts, Law Enforcement, and Adult and Juvenile Detention, as well as alternatives to detention or convictions.
- Understanding the impacts policies, practices and procedures may have on the individuals and families we touch.
- Using data and metrics to better inform our efforts to obtain desired outcomes for system improvements and the lives of individuals and families impacted by criminal justice systems.
Vision
An equitable, fair, accessible and effective criminal justice system that increases alternatives and improves outcomes for those affected by it. Ultimately, a community with dramatically reduced numbers of people victimized by crime or involved in the criminal justice system.
Mission
We provide objective, innovative and expert research, analysis, strategic direction, coordination and project management to the County’s criminal justice continuum in order to improve functions and outcomes by providing strategic planning which balances policies, practices and changing community needs. We focus on complex, cross-agency, and multi-system challenges which will benefit from centralized leadership or support.
We accomplish our mission by:
- Effectively communicating the criminal-justice big picture to align with and contribute to improved processes, outcomes, and decision making
- Community outreach and engagement
- Listening to, learning with, and valuing our communities, seeking solutions together
- Identifying innovations and best practices
- Building and maintaining relationships through multi-agency project management
- Collecting, analyzing, and sharing of data while protecting privileged identifier information
- Process improvement
- Research and program evaluation
- Advising County, State and local leaders on policies designed to achieve our vision
Goals
- Safer communities, where crime is rare and those involved with harm are treated with dignity and respect.
- Improved equity within the County’s criminal justice system.
- Accessibility of justice system processes and programs to serve all residents of King County.
- Ultimately, a community with dramatically reduced numbers of people victimized by crime and involved in the criminal justice system.
