Celebrate completion of King County’s Murray CSO project, June 10

King County will host a community celebration to mark the completion of its Murray Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) Control Project near Lowman Park Beach in West Seattle on Saturday, June 10, from 10 a.m. to noon. The family-friendly event will feature tours of the new facility designed to protect public health and water quality during heavy rains, as well as information on public art and green building design.

Celebrate the completion of a new clean-water facility that will protect public health and water quality by controlling overflows of stormwater and sewage near Lowman Beach Park in West Seattle. 

On Saturday, June 10, from 10 a.m. to noon, King County’s Wastewater Treatment Division will host an event at the Murray Wet Weather Facility, located at 7018 Beach Dr. S.W. in West Seattle. County officials will speak briefly during a short program at 10:30 a.m.

King County invested $47 million in its Murray Combined Sewer Overflow Control (CSO) Project, which entailed designing and building a one-million-gallon underground tank to temporarily hold stormwater and sewage during heavy rains when the treatment system is at capacity. The project was completed nearly $240,000 under budget. 

When storms subside, the storage tank contents will be pumped to the West Point Treatment Plant in Seattle’s Magnolia neighborhood. Prior to the completion of the storage tank, stormwater and sewage would overflow directly into Puget Sound, putting public health at risk.

As part of a related project, King County invested an additional $26 million to upgrade the nearby Murray Pump Station. Improvements there included mechanical upgrades as well as the installation a permanent back-up electrical system to provide power during outages and other emergencies.
