Work The Work:There is no typical day in the King County Jail; however, here are some of the services performed by Corrections Officers: - processing inmates in and out of the facility.
- providing security of inmates during court proceedings.
- calculating length of commitment including credit for time served and “good time”.
- overseeing persons who have been arrested and are awaiting trial or have been convicted of a crime and sentenced to serve time in jail.
- maintaining security and inmate accountability to prevent disturbances, assaults, and escapes.
- making security checks of the perimeter, housing and work areas and initiate counts of inmates.
- maintaining control and discipline using interpersonal communication skills.
- using physical restraints and restraining devices.
- performing searches to prevent the introduction of contraband into the facility.
- security screening of visitors.
- counseling inmates regarding facility rules, regulations, resources, and programs available while in custody.
- demonstrating proficiency in the use and care of firearms, restraint methods and equipment and emergency protocols.
- maintaining knowledge of radio communication and other electronic equipment.
