Work

The Work:

There is no typical day in the King County Jail; however, here are some of the services performed by Corrections Officers:

  •  processing inmates in and out of the facility.

  •  providing security of inmates during court proceedings.

  •  calculating length of commitment including credit for time served and “good time”.

  •  overseeing persons who have been arrested and are awaiting trial or have been convicted of a crime and sentenced to serve time in jail.

  •  maintaining security and inmate accountability to prevent disturbances, assaults, and escapes.

  •  making security checks of the perimeter, housing and work areas and initiate counts of inmates.

  •  maintaining control and discipline using interpersonal communication skills.

  •  using physical restraints and restraining devices.

  •  performing searches to prevent the introduction of contraband into the facility.

  •  security screening of visitors.

  •  counseling inmates regarding facility rules, regulations, resources, and programs available while in custody.

  •  demonstrating proficiency in the use and care of firearms, restraint methods and equipment and emergency protocols.

  •  maintaining knowledge of radio communication and other electronic equipment.
