RULES TO REVIEW BEFORE CALLLING
Motions Without Argument: Local Rule 7(b); Trial Continuances: Local Rule 40; Summary Judgment: Local Rule 56 & Civil Rule 56;
Change of case assignment, consolidation of cases, or reactivation of cases with new judge and case schedule: direct to the Chief Judge, per Local Rule 40
TRIAL PREPARATION- Status conferences, CR 16 conferences, or pre-trial conferences will be scheduled upon request of the parties and approval of the court.
- Pre-trial orders will be sent 6 weeks prior to the trial date. Please refer to the order regarding exhibits, jury instructions, trial briefs, and pre-trial motions.
- Cases will be put on standby status 3 court days prior to the trial date until reassigned to an available judge. The bailiff will contact you with updates or you may check the Superior Court homepage. Click on Civil Calendar.
- Notify the court immediately if a case settles so the trial date may be stricken.
- Exhibits - Contact the courtroom clerk or call at (206) 296-9230 regarding submittal of the Joint Statement of Evidence and pre-marking of all trial exhibits. Please do NOT mark directly on any exhibits as this will be done by the clerk. You will be pre-assigned exhibit numbers and asked to bring (2) notebooks each containing a complete set of exhibits, with the appropriate pre-assigned tabs: 1) notebook of original exhibits for the clerk; and 2) a set of working copies of all exhibits for the judge.
GENERAL INFORMATION
- Only motions with oral argument need to be confirmed prior to the hearing date (preferably two weeks prior).
- Please do not contact the court to check the status of a ruling on a motion until 1 week past the date noted. This provides adequate time for consideration by the judge and processing of the orders.
- All working papers should be mailed or delivered directly to the judges' mailroom. Please do not deliver to the courtroom as it disrupts court proceedings. They may be faxed but only upon prior approval of the court. This court accepts faxes up to 15 pages only.
- Requests for oral argument on motions without oral argument must be requested in the pleadings. The judge will review the motion on the date noted, and if further argument is necessary, the bailiff will contact the parties to schedule a hearing.
- Stipulated or agreed motions do not need to be noted for hearing. They will be considered within 2 days of receipt.
- Please email the bailiff to schedule motions requiring oral argument.
- DO NOTconfirm motions without oral argument; these motions may be set for any day which meets service requirements of the rule.
- Please notify the bailiff by email to strike a motion; always provide case name and cause no. and the date for which the motion is noted.
- Copies of orders WILL NOT be mailed if pre-addressed stamped envelopes are not provided pursuant to KCLR 7; copies of orders may be obtained through the clerk's office approximately 5 days after a ruling has been issued if no envelopes provided.
- DO NOT call the bailiff regarding the status of a ruling within 48 hours of the day the motion is noted to allow receipt of a conformed copy of the order in envelopes that were provided.
- Motions not in compliance with local rules will be stricken without prejudice.
- Always provide case name, cause no., your name and phone number, and the nature of your inquiry when calling/emailing the bailiff; otherwise, you may not receive a response.
- Email inquiries usually receive a more prompt response than phone messages.
JUDICIAL EXTERNSHIPS
Judge Hayden provides judicial externship opportunities to law students throughout the year. If you are interested in applying for one of the externship positions, you must meet the following criteria: you must be earning academic credit for the externship and you must be pre-approved by your law school for participation in such a program. Judge Hayden accepts externs for the Fall, Spring and Summer semesters. Interviews are conducted and positions are filled on a rolling basis.

Application materials should include: cover letter (indicating which semester you are interested in applying for), resume, transcript, writing sample, and list of references. Main duties will be performing legal research and writing. Interested applicants should submit resume, references and writing samples.
WEDDINGS
Judge Hayden does perform weddings M-F at 8AM only, in the King County Courthouse. You must have a valid marriage license. Please call for an appointment and fees. Judge Hayden does NOT perform weddings in the Jail.
