Protecting Public Health Update: More than 250 people filled the Medical Arts Center Auditorium at Valley Medical Center in Renton on Wednesday, March 4 for our Town Hall meeting on protecting public health. As King County residents struggle to make ends meet during the current economic downturn, demand for public health services is increasing. We had a good discussion of the services provided by Public Health-Seattle & King County and the future of these services in our region.

Public Health–Seattle & King County leads the effort to protect the health of county residents. Public Health’s work includes: - Tracking infectious diseases like tuberculosis, influenza, and STDs, and helping coordinate the medical response;
- Working with grocery stores and restaurants to ensure that employees handle and store food properly and remove dangerous recalled products;
- Ensuring safe drinking water;
- Improving access to health care and providing direct services at 10 clinics; and
- Partnering with businesses and community groups to encourage healthy behaviors.
Over the last century, public health initiatives alone are credited with increasing the average lifespan by 25 years. But, now, a severe budget crisis threatens to undermine the programs that protect our residents.
Please join the Council in Renton for a discussion on the vital work being done by Public Health and the challenges we face due to the current budget crisis. The Director of Public Health will provide a briefing and host a panel discussion with our community partners.
You will have a chance to ask questions, share your ideas and suggestions, and provide public testimony on any issue. Public Health resource staff will be on hand to discuss programs.
Town Hall Meetings are an opportunity for the Council to hear directly from you in your community. We hope to see you there! More about Town Halls
The County Council is a regional government committed to engaging King County residents in their local communities. Throughout the year, the Council holds local Town Hall Meetings on issues of public importance. Community members have the opportunity to meet Councilmembers, be briefed by local and regional experts, and provide public testimony. Each Town Hall is a special meeting of the Council's Committee of the Whole (COW), the only standing committee on which all nine members serve. COW considers legislation and policy issues of interest to the entire council. Since 2007, more than 3,100 people have met with Councilmembers at Town Halls held in Covington, Federal Way, Shoreline, Burien, Kent, West Seattle, Renton, Redmond, Seattle, Maple Valley, and Sammamish. Questions? Please email CouncilTownHall@kingcounty.gov or call 206-296-0335.
