McDermott leads the effort to provide sustainable funding for ongoing water taxi service to West Seattle and Vashon

Summary

The King County Water Taxi is an important regional transportation solution. The West Seattle and Vashon water taxi routes are cost effective and have lower operating cost per rider and higher ridership than many other transportation options throughout the County.

Story

Metropolitan King County Council Chair Joe McDermott released the following statement on the efforts:

"Today I am thrilled to vote on final passage of a County budget and ordinances that provide a sustainable future and funding for the King County Water Taxi connecting both West Seattle and Vashon Island to downtown Seattle.

“The King County Water Taxi is an important regional transportation solution. The West Seattle and Vashon water taxi routes are cost effective and have lower operating cost per rider and higher ridership than many other transportation options throughout the County.

“The water taxi is crucial to easing traffic in and out of West Seattle and clogged roads downtown. All of King County benefits when commuters and goods can quickly get in and out of Seattle.

“Demand has continually grown, and the water taxi has had record ridership, projected to surpass 600,000 this year. More and more riders will continue to come enjoy the congestion free trip to downtown Seattle, as it is reliable, fast, and fun.”
