Council recognizes 3A Boys Basketball Champs Rainier Beach Vikings

The Vikings, consisting of players, Keith Smith, Sam Cunliffe, Marquis Gurski, Darrion Manago, N’Kiel Nelson, Kevin Porter Jr., Kahlil Shabazz, Tijon Rodde, Tre Levias, Freddie Roberson, Anthony Still, Kendall Williams, Stevie Smith, and Kahlil Goodwin, compiled a district record of 14 – 1, and an overall record of 21 – 6, ranked #1 in the state, and achieved a national ranking in the top 40 by USA Today

RECOGNITION

WHEREAS, the 2016 State Champion Rainier Beach Vikings Boys Basketball Team won the 2016 3A State Basketball Championship with a dominating 70 – 49 victory over the O’Dea Fighting Irish on Saturday, March 5th, at the Tacoma Dome; and

WHEREAS, under the leadership of Head Coach Mike Bethea, Assistant coaches Harold Wright, David King, Robert Delgardo, Will Dorsey and David Belmonte, with support from Ahtletic Director George Foster, former Principal Dwayne Chappell, Interim Principal Ivory Brooks, and Vice Principals Princess Shareef, and Michelle Peterson, the Rainier Beach Vikings have become one of the most accomplished Boys Basketball teams in the history of Washington state high schools; and

WHEREAS, the Vikings, consisting of players, Keith Smith, Sam Cunliffe, Marquis Gurski, Darrion Manago, N’Kiel Nelson, Kevin Porter Jr., Kahlil Shabazz, Tijon Rodde, Tre Levias, Freddie Roberson, Anthony Still, Kendall Williams, Stevie Smith, and Kahlil Goodwin, compiled a district record of 14 – 1, and an overall record of 21 – 6, ranked #1 in the state, and achieved a national ranking in the top 40 by USA Today; and

WHEREAS, this year’s championship marks the fifth state Boys Basketball championship and seventh Metro League Boys Basketball title since 2006, and ninth state title in Rainier Beach High School’s history; and

WHEREAS, in the past 21 years, 160 Rainier Beach Vikings have gone on to attend college, with approximately 120 of those student-athletes earning their college degrees, and five former Viking going on to compete at basketball’s highest level by playing in the NBA;

NOW, THEREFORE, we, the Metropolitan King County Council, recognize and congratulate the

2016 State Champion
Rainier Beach Boys Basketball Team


for their amazing resilience, excellence, and collective achievements, as they once again accomplished the highest pinnacle of success in high school basketball in the state of Washington.
