Aug. 15, 2011 Pete von Reichbauer Presents a Letter of Recognition for Korean Independence DayKing County Councilman Pete von Reichbauer presented a letter of recognition during Monday’s council meeting in celebration of Korea’s Independence Day. “It is my extraordinary honor to celebrate this holiday with our Korean community,” said von Reichbauer of King County District 7.
The Independence Day of South Korea, celebrated annually on August 15th, commemorates the freedom from decades of foreign occupation and the formation of the South Korean republic. The holiday is called Gwangbokjeol (pronounced "choh-goo-kay-bahng-eh nal") by the South Koreans, meaning Restoration of Light Day.
A reception preceding the recognition was attended by local elected officials, officers and members from the Korean American community including Korean Consul General, Young Song. The new Consul General was recently introduced by the King County Council in May.
King County has a historic relationship, both economically and culturally, with the Republic of South Korea. The region has a large Korean population that greatly contributes to the diverse cultural character. Pete von Reichbauer’s district, which encompasses most of south King County, has one of the largest numbers of Korean-Americans in King County.
