March 23, 2009 County Council recognizes Seattle Christian’s “Winning Warriors” for 2009 Girls Basketball ChampionshipOvertime thriller leads to first state title for SeaTac school The Metropolitan King County Council today recognized the girls of Seattle Christian School, who had to go to Yakima—and into overtime—to win their first 1A Girls High School Basketball Championship.
“The Warriors were true to their nickname, winning their state title by putting together two heart-stopping wins in two days,” said Councilmember Julia Patterson, who represents the city of SeaTac, home of the new state champs.
Coach Bob Kickner’s squad was the top-ranked team in their classification going into the 2009 tourney, but had to mount a furious comeback against Granger High in the championship game to overcome an 11-point halftime deficit. Led by Melissa Collier and her sister Katie, the Warriors sent the game into overtime and then held on for a 55-53 win.
“The Warriors were almost perfect this season, with their only loss coming by a single point.” said Patterson. “I know this is just the first of many titles that Coach Kickner and his players will bring back to Seattle Christian.”
