Sept. 22, 2008 PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, the Covington
Domestic Violence Task Force (CDVTF) was formed in June of 2004 by Victoria
Throm and Curt Lindsley. Its purpose is to raise awareness and support
victims by providing assistance and referrals to victims and their families;
and
WHEREAS, the CDVTF and
it’s founder, Victoria Throm, created “Purple Light Nights,”
the goal of which is to have residents install a purple light on their
front porch or decorate a business window with strings of purple lights
to send the message that “Domestic Violence Has NO Place In Our
Community”; and
WHEREAS, the first annual
“Purple Light Nights” event was last October and the event
has now grown exponentially in just under a year. Pierce County, Thurston
County, Snohomish County, the City of Seattle, and King County have joined
other counties and cities from Iowa, Oregon, Maine, Illinois, Nebraska,
Idaho, Ohio, Montana, Florida, Texas and Minnesota to promote “Purple
Light Nights”; and
WHEREAS, increased public
awareness through this campaign will help support victims, increase understanding
of domestic violence and promote safety, healing, and empowerment for
victims and their children;
NOW, THEREFORE, we, the
Metropolitan King County Council, proclaim October 2008, as a time for
the
PURPLE
LIGHTS NIGHT CAMPAIGN
in King County and strongly
encourage all citizens to take an active role in the Purple Light Nights™
campaign by putting up a purple light on their front porch or place of
business to remember the victims of domestice violence and give hope to
those still living with abuse.
