A “light” to drive away the darkness: County Council recognizes Purple Light Nights against domestic violence

Community celebration grows into national effort

A single light in Covington has been joined by other lights throughout the Puget Sound. These lights have become beacons of support and encouragement for survivors of domestic violence. The Metropolitan King County Council today recognized the Covington Domestic Violence Task Force, creators of the “Purple Light Nights” against domestic violence.

“This group is raising awareness and sending a message that domestic violence will not be tolerated in our Community,” said Councilmember Reagan Dunn, whose district includes the city of Covington. “Purple Light Nights is an innovative way to raise awareness and give strength to victims.”

The Covington Domestic Violence Task Force (CDVTF) was formed in June 2004 by Victoria Throm and Curt Lindsley with the goal of raising awareness and supporting victims through assistance and referral services. Since the color purple is the international color of domestic violence, Throm suggested placing purple lights throughout Covington to recognize those who have lost their lives due to domestic violence and to recognize and encourage survivors of abuse.

“Past victims of domestic violence will see these lights and know that the community continues to care,” said Covington Councilmember Wayne Snoey. “Current victims will be reminded that support exists for them and we hope it will cause them to seek it.”

What started out in one community has grown. King County has been joined by Pierce, Thurston, and Snohomish counties and the city of Seattle in recognizing “Purple Light Nights.” Cities from 11 states from throughout the U.S. are also participating in “Purple Light.”

Residents can join in by hanging a purple light on their front porch or at their place of business anytime during October. For more information please contact Victoria Throm at (253) 638-1110, ext. 2237 or by visiting the website.
