A five-acre portion of a King County park may become a gateway to Auburn’s historic Mary Olson farm with today’s transfer by the Metropolitan King County Council of a parcel from the North Green River Park to the city of Auburn.

The portion of North Green River Park being transferred is located along the Green River and adjacent to Auburn’s Mary Olson Farm along Green River Road south of SE 277th. The Mary Olson Farm is the most intact 1880s family farm in King County and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

“Ownership of North Green River Park creates a natural opportunity for the city of Auburn to develop the area into future expansion of Mary Olson Farm,” said King County Councilmember Pete von Reichbauer, whose District 7 includes North Green River Park.

The park transfer is consistent with the King County Annexation Initiative and the County’s Parks Business Transition Plan. Both plans encourage the transfer of local, in-city parks and pools to become the responsibility of the local suburban cities where they are located, so that the County can focus on its 25,000-acre regional parks system, one of the largest in the country.
