June 9, 2008 “Green Cleaning:” King County to examine ways to provide environmentally friendly cleaning Council approves studying expansion of County’s environmental purchasing program
The Metropolitan King County Council today took a step to “stay green” as it “stays clean” by directing the Executive to study the benefits of expanding the County’s environmentally preferable purchasing program for cleaning methods and products.
“King County is a national leader in efforts for caring for our environment“, said the legislation’s prime sponsor, Councilmember Jane Hague. “This is yet another way we can lead by ensuring that our ‘house’ is green-cleaned.”
“As the purveyor of wastewater treatment in King County, we encourage citizens to make careful decisions about what they send down the drain and choose non-toxic cleaning products,” said Councilmember Larry Phillips, “This is an opportunity to lead by example by making the right cleaning product decisions for our water quality, environment, and employees.”
The legislation adopted by the Council directs the County Executive to research and report back to the Council on the environmental, health and economic benefits of expanding the County’s environmentally preferable purchasing program to include cleaning products and cleaning methods for all agencies.
Places where environmentally preferable cleaning products and methods might be used include general office space, public restrooms, health and human service clinics, housing facilities, public transportation vehicles, fleet vehicles and community centers.
The Executive will submit a plan to the Council by August 15, 2008.
