July 23, 2008 Council receives results of first Countywide Community ForumAdding transportation options favored by more than half of participantsCoordinators of the informal community networks of citizens that meet to discuss countywide issues today released the results of their first Countywide Community Forum.
From June 28 to July 20, more than 500 volunteers participated in the forums, for which the first designated topic was regional transportation. The Countywide Community Forums are part of the “Citizen Councilor Network” program established by the Council in 2007. Each individual forum consisted of 4 to 12 participants who met to discuss the designated topic and then answer of series of questions. Their responses, which were non-scientific, were tabulated and the results are provided to County officials.
The results of the first series of forums show that more than half of the participants named traffic congestion as the single biggest transportation challenge facing King County, and that their first priority would be to add transit service to help alleviate congestion.
“The goal of the community forums is to allow the public to provide input to County officials on issues of importance,” said Council Chair Julia Patterson. “These results are a reflection that with gas at $4 a gallon, transportation options are on everyone’s mind.”
“The information provided by these forums gives us a window into how the public sees this issue and their proposed solutions,” said Councilmember Dow Constantine, chair of the Council’s Transportation Committee. “I want to thank the organizers of the forums and the members of the public who took time out to meet and discuss this topic.”
