Feb. 19, 2008 Lindbergh Community Pool transferred to Renton School District County Council authorizes interlocal agreement as part of Benson Hill annexationThe incorporation of the Benson Hill community into the city of Renton continued today with unanimous approval by the King County Council of an agreement transferring the Lindbergh Community Pool—also known as the Renton Pool— from King County to the Renton School District. “I’m pleased that we are able to quickly finalize this agreement,” said Councilmember Reagan Dunn, whose district includes the Lindbergh Pool. “The people of Benson Hill have said that they want to be part of Renton. King County and the City are now moving forward to implement that decision.” Under the interlocal agreement, the pool will remain a public facility owned and operated by the school district, which will assume full and complete responsibility for maintenance, repairs, and any subsequent improvements to the properties and facilities. The school district is expected to partner with the city to continue programming at the pool. The transfer of the pool to the school district is related to the annexation of the Benson Hill Potential Annexation Area to the City of Renton. Residents of the unincorporated area voted to become part of Renton in November. Since 2004, King County has provided financial incentives to cities willing to annex unincorporated urban communities adjacent to their borders. These incentives ease financial issues related to the addition of new neighborhoods. The state Growth Management Act calls for cities to be the provider of local government services to urban areas and for counties to provide regional services, with counties also providing local services to rural unincorporated areas.
