Public hearing Nov. 5 on fees and levies proposed in the 2008 King County Budget

The public will have a chance to comment Monday on the proposed 2008 King County Budget and the fees and levies that help balance the proposed budget.

The hearing will be held as part of a special meeting of the King County Council:

Monday, November 5
Starting at 11:00 a.m., Council Chambers
10th floor, King County Courthouse

More than 600 people have already attended four evening public hearings held by the Council over the past two weeks in Bellevue, Kent, West Seattle, and downtown Seattle, many in support of funding for mental illness and drug dependency treatment and diversion.

During that time, the Operating Budget, Fiscal Management and Mental Health Committee met in panels during the day to examine the operating budgets proposed for criminal justice, health and human services, parks, wastewater, solid waste, Metro Transit and the county road system. The committee has also evaluated the budgets of the separately-elected officials and for general government operations, and analyzed investments in capital facilities.

With analysis from budget staff, the Operating Budget Committee will draw up a list of funding recommendations that go before the full Budget Committee during the week of November 13. Since the Council must reconcile all expenses with available revenues, fee and levy ordinances are considered by the full Budget Committee during this time. The Council is expected to vote on Tuesday, Nov. 13, to adopt the revenue measures supporting the 2008 budget.

All 9 members of the Council serve on the Budget Committee during the upcoming budget reconcilliation process. The Council is expected to adopt the final 2008 King County Budget on Nov. 19.
