Council accepts $3 million in private donations in support of Children’s Health Initiative

The Metropolitan King County Council today passed legislation for the County to accept $3 million in current and future donations for the implementation of programs that are part of the King County Children’s Health Initiative.

“Protecting the health of all our children is a goal that transcends politics,” said Council Chair Larry Gossett. “The many groups who have contributed to this effort understand that healthy children grow up to be healthy adults. These funds will go a long way toward ensuring that will happen.”

The Children’s Health Initiative is the County’s effort to link children with existing state and federal health insurance for which they may qualify. This County-funded component of the Initiative focuses on enrolling the approximately 9,000 eligible children in King County in health insurance programs to which they are entitled. Under the Initiative, the County is also continuing to advocate that the State fulfill its promise to cover all kids by 2010.

A third component of the Initiative is to remove the barriers children face in receiving consistent access to health care services by implementing innovative pilot projects, funded by private donors. The motion adopted today by the Council recognizes or accepts donations made by health care organizations and private agencies, including:

  • Group Health Cooperative
  • Washington Dental Service
  • Children’s Hospital and Regional Medical Center
  • W. K. Kellogg Foundation
  • Robert Wood Johnson Foundation
  • United Way of King County

The funds being donated over the years 2007 to 2009 will match the County’s appropriation of $3 million in general fund resources for the outreach component of the Initiative.
