Council Unanimously Adopts Balanced 2006 King County Budget

Members of the King County Council unanimously adopted a balanced 2006 King County Budget that continues their policies of fiscal responsibility while renewing their commitment to regional human services. The final 12-0 vote marks the third straight year that the King County budget has been adopted unanimously.
The spending plan tightens oversight and controls on spending through scrutiny of agency business plans and use of performance measures to ensure the most in savings and efficiencies.
Under the theme of "Measuring Up," the Council conducted a high-level assessment of agency strategic business plans and performance measures. In 2006, the council plans to develop a countywide system of strategic performance measurement that can be used to make wise decisions about resource allocation.
The $3.46 billion budget includes $580 million in the general fund, which supports mandatory funding for criminal justice agencies, the costs of general government, and discretionary funding for human services. The final Council action comes after five weeks of intensive, bi-partisan work, during which time members heard from 181 people who testified at five public hearings and two Council meetings.
