Dear Friends,
King County is pleased to provide the services of the Institutional Network (I-Net) as a tool to enhance the teaching, learning, and government service resources available to our region's residents.
First introduced in 1999, the fiber optic network now connects public service agencies throughout the county for two-way video, voice, and data services. Schools in unincorporated King County, libraries, King County government agencies, public safety agencies, courts, public health facilities and other agencies throughout the county are now connected by this valuable public infrastructure network.
The I-Net was made possible as part of the county's cable TV franchise agreement with TCI and Viacom Cable (now Comcast)'s rebuild of its cable system in the Puget Sound region. In an age in which technology is a key component, the I-Net has ensured that agencies can expand its communications capabilities. It is a technology network that enables schools to share advanced classes and teacher training; make computerized library resources available at all branches and at all schools on the network; and save public money by enabling court arraignments to occur over video.
King County's successful partnership with Comcast and I-Net's user agencies has resulted in one of the largest and most useful government communications networks in the country. I am pleased to witness the ongoing accomplishments of I-Net.
Sincerely,
Ron Sims
King County Executive
