Transitional Duty Assignment

Transitional Duty Assignment

The Transitional Duty Assignment (TDA) (light/modified duty) return to work program helps employees with temporary medical restrictions return to their regular positions faster and provide them with a support system by keeping them connected to King County.

Employees perform administrative work, customer service, data entry, e-file management, scanning projects, surveys, phone work and other activities lasting from a week to a maximum of six months. After meeting all criteria, employees are placed based on available work and skills. Participants earn vacation and sick days on top of being paid through their home departments. Please check with your specific division to see if and how they participate in the larger King County TDA program.

Program overview:

  • Typical type of work: perform administrative work, customer service, data entry, e-file management, scanning projects, surveys, phone work, and other activities
  • Work assignment timeframe: 1 week to a maximum of 6 months
  • Employee benefits: TDA keeps employees socially supported and engaged, and engaged employees return to work more quickly. TDA allows for the employee to remain in a paid, benefited status (can earn vacation and sick days on top of being paid through your home department).
  • Program eligibility: Please check with your specific division to see if and how they participate in the larger King County TDA Program.
  • Program process: After meeting all criteria, employees are placed based on available work and skills after speaking with the TDA coordinator
  • Hosting TDA department benefits: There is no cost for the receiving department to host a TDA worker. TDA workers will likely need a brief orientation to the worksite and new task assignments. After that, we just need a paper time card every two weeks.

The TDA program has helped me stay mobile and productive. The site supervisors have been very accommodating, ensuring that if my injury is aggravated to let them know. They were happy to have someone fill the assignment even temporarily. I had the ability of utilizing the equipment to fit my needs I was able to work at my pace. I was trained in Excel and Outlook, answered phones, and greeted people as they had meetings. I will also be training the next person taking on this job. I love bringing a smile to everyone and making their visit to the office a memorable one.
