June 4, 2009 CASE UPDATES: June 2009State v. Ballard: Defendant Paul Ballard was convicted of Forgery and Identity Theft in the Second Degree for running a prolific credit card scam where he made his own credit cards using other individuals' identification and account numbers. The defendant also faces additional charges in other cases that could result in a sentence of up to 10 years in prison. DPA Mafe Rajul handled the prosecution of this case. Return to the News State v. Bird: Defendant Daniel Bird was convicted of Assault in the First Degree, Robbery in the First Degree, and Felon in Possession of a Firearm for attacking and robbing a man of his bicycle at gunpoint. When the victim refused to give the defendant his bicycle, the defendant attempted to shoot him in the chest. Fortunately, the gun misfired and ejected the bullet from the chamber. The defendant now faces over 30 years in prison at sentencing. DPA Mike Pellicciotti handled the prosecution of this case. Return to the News State v. Dillard: Defendant Damario Dillard was convicted of Murder in the Second Degree and two counts of Assault in the Second Degree, all with firearm enhancements, for his participation in a gang- related ambush of rival gang members that left one man dead and two others wounded. This was a challenging case because several key witnesses refused to cooperate. The defendant now faces approximately 38 years in prison at sentencing. DPA Val Richey handled the prosecution of this case. Return to the News State v. Ruffin: Defendant James Ruffin was convicted of Assault in the Second Degree -- Domestic Violence for attacking his girlfriend and causing several injuries, including a facial fracture and a black eye. In the weeks following the assault, the victim learned that she was pregnant with the defendant's child and refused to testify at trial. The PAO proceeded to trial and presented the case through the testimony of medical professionals, the responding police officers, and the victim's family members. The defendant was sentenced to the high end of the standard range. Senior DPA Cecelia Gregson handled the prosecution of this case. Return to the News State v. Seals, Randolph, and Rutledge: These three juvenile offenders have been found guilty of attacking a Seattle police officer who responded to an assault that one of the juveniles was engaged in. One juvenile was convicted of Assault in the Third Degree for kicking the officer in the face several times. The other two juveniles were found guilty of Obstruction of a Law Enforcement Officer for attacking the officer. All three juveniles now face up to 30 days in juvenile detention.
