Dec. 7, 2009 Drug Court CelebrationsKing County Drug Diversion Court recently celebrated its 15th anniversary with a special Drug Court graduation and program, including remarks by Gil Kerlikowske, the Obama Administration's Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy. This year also marks the 10-year anniversary of King County's Juvenile Drug Court. In Drug Court, offenders undergo a rigorous program of both in-patient and out-patient treatment, followed by court monitoring of counseling, meetings and UA testing. If the offender successfully completes the program, the criminal charges are dismissed. Many graduates enter the program after decades of serious drug addiction and leave Drug Court with jobs, family reconciliation and a new outlook on life. Each graduating class also represents savings in prison costs to the state of over $1 million. King County is fortunate to have these successful and progressive drug treatment programs.
