Aug. 5, 2009 Prosecutor's Namesake Heads to Training Puppy MalengAs part of an ongoing partnership with Canine Companions for Independence, the organization that trained the PAO's service dogs, PAO employees recently celebrated puppy "Maleng's" graduation from basic training to advanced assistance training, where he will be trained to become a full-fledged service dog. Canine Companions for Independence is a non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people with disabilities by providing highly trained assistance dogs, including service dogs, skilled companions, and hearing and facility dogs. In order to provide this important service, Canine Companions relies heavily on volunteer puppy raisers who raise and provide basic training to puppies for their first year of life. Only one in three of all puppies has the privilege of "graduating" to the full service dog training program. The dogs that do not graduate are adopted by loving families.
The PAO thanks Patti and Gerry Whitmarsh, Maleng's volunteer puppy raisers, who did such a fantastic job raising him and providing him a loving home for his first year of life.
