Phillips Praises Viaduct Decision, Urges Access for Northwest Seattle Residents
"A courageous choice, now and for the future," is what Councilmember Larry Phillips called the decision to replace the Alaskan Way Viaduct with a bored bypass tunnel, surface, and transit improvements. Phillips also asked that the viaduct project team continue exploring access to the bypass tunnel for northwest Seattle communities. Read more. University Link Light Rail Extension Earns $813 Federal GrantSound Transit welcomed Federal Transit Administration officials to Seattle as the FTA awarded an $813 million grant to build the University Link light rail extension. Council Authorizes Settlement of Federal Complaint over Inmate Conditions at King County Jail The King County Council authorized a settlement agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice over conditions at the King County Jail. Councilmember Phillips called humane treatment for those in the criminal justice system a "founding principle of our democracy" and pledged to monitor implementation of changes called for in the settlement. Council Examines Metro's Snow ResponseThe Council's Committee of the Whole received briefings from Metro Transit and the Road Services Division on their response to the December snowstorm and the week of torrential rains that followed.
