BNSF east rail corridor easement purchase

The Metropolitan King County Council unanimously passed legislation that will support bringing the BNSF eastside rail corridor into public ownership. Although the Port of Seattle will be purchasing the entire corridor and have ultimate authority over it, this legislation would allow the County to purchase a trail easement from The Port. The County's focus will be in partnering with The Port on the regional public outreach process and to pursue a trail that runs throughout this corridor. The Port intends to have this corridor provide for dual use - rails and trails.

The following is a public statement I made, before the vote was taken.

"We have heard from many stakeholders on this issue. A home is an oasis. It’s an oasis from the stresses of work, traffic and other sensory impacts. It’s a calm and escape from the hectic nature of life outside of the home. Over the past couple of years, this Council has made quality of life for its citizens a priority. As options are developed that contemplate dual use, we must look out for those who own property along the corridor - those whose major asset is their home.

King County and the Port have a massive obligation to shoulder a regional public process that earns public trust by ensuring that the process is thorough, fair and inclusive. We must have a responsible voice for those who live and work along this corridor. The Port and King County have a rare opportunity to earn public trust and to determine uses that enable the region. I will make it my priority to ensure that these voices are heard. I will work to the best of my abilities to ensure that quality of life is protected for all people affected by the future use of this corridor."
