May is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month
In June 1977, Representatives Norman Y Mineta (CA) and Frank Horton (NY) introduced a House Resolution that would eventually become Asian Pacific American (APA) Month. Senators Daniel Inouye and Spark Matsunaga, both of Hawaii introduced the Senate bill one month later. May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States on May 7, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. The majority of the workers who laid the tracks were Chinese immigrants. Today, APA Heritage month is celebrated across the nation, including King County, to honor and celebrate the contributions the diverse communities that make up the Asian Pacific American community.
