Shoreline
Incorporated in 1995, Shoreline developed around two rail lines and later two major roads. In 1891, part of the Great Northern Line from Minnesota to Washington was built through Shoreline and gave the area a direct rail link to downtown Seattle. With access to the railroad came development of suburban residences and summer cottages. Farmers and commuters found even more convenient access to the city with the construction of the Interurban trolley system between 1902 and 1910, which ran at a steady 30 miles per hour. Recreational areas like Echo Lake, a popular bathing spot near the Snohomish County border, sprung up to meet the needs of an increasingly urban region.
Roads began to replace rail as the most convenient means of access as early as 1913, when a route parallel to the Interurban line was paved in brick all the way to the King/Snohomish county line. The last remaining stretch of this road, Ronald Place North, named for early Shoreline resident and civic leader Judge James Ronald, is currently listed as one of Washington's most endangered historic properties. Most of the road was later paved and is today known as Aurora Avenue North or Highway 99.
Finally, the construction of Interstate 5 in the late 1950s and early 1960s brought the last major wave of development to the area.
The neighborhoods which today form the City of Shoreline include Ballinger, Briarcrest, Echo Lake, Highland Terrace, Hillwood, Innis Arden, Meridian Park, North City, Parkwood, Richmond Beach, Richmond Highlands, Ridgecrest and The Highlands. Shoreline is home to over 50,000 residents and is known for its exceptional school district, tight-knit neighborhoods and strong network of parks.
