Council on Monday to consider extension of regional jail contract

Local cities may have two more years to house their misdemeanor offenders in County jails under a proposed extension of a regional jail services contract that was set to expire in 2012. Recent efficiencies in criminal justice have led to lower projections of jail population and more time to plan for an integrated regional solution to secure detention. Several cities have already begun planning for siting of local jails, but a panel of elected officials and staff from local cities supported the re-opening of negotiations to extend the current jail contract through 2014 at Monday's Committee of the Whole meeting, including (L to R) Redmond City Councilmember Kimberly Allen, Seattle Deputy Mayor Tim Ceis, and Kirkland City Councilmember Bob Sternoff. The County Council will consider final action on July 7. Read the staff report and see a PowerPoint presentation.
